Harmay Cosmetics Store in Shanghai

A second Harmay store, a Chinese cosmetics brand, has just opened in Shanghai's largest shopping center. With the help of the architect firm AIM, the brand chose to rely on interior design as a key selling point for the store. Like its first store, this one is also retail focused, conveying an inviting message to consumers in the neighborhood and its surrounding areas. The interior design is inspired by the neighborhoods and alleys of old Shanghai, while adding a modern twist.

The new store is located on Wukang Lu, a busy thoroughfare in the city's Huashan Lu district. It has a triangular structure and is based on four-floors. On the first floor, the space is open with a sales area nestled under the stainless steel staircase leading to the main store and connecting all four floors together. The counters, where the products are exposed, are also made of stainless steel, wood or ceramic tiles. The walls and the ceiling of the store are raw, without paint, made of just concrete.

On the second floor, there is a mix of floor finishes, mimicking the layout of Shanghai’s old homes, giving the store more character. On the floor above, metal cabinets are set against a terracotta tile backdrop, large  floor-to-ceiling windows let in daylight and also provide an open view of the neighborhood. The top floor includes a large storage area with shared spaces such as an outdoor patio with tables and chairs, so customers can rest and take a break between thierpurchases.
