DRESS, DREAMS AND DESIRE: FASHION AND THE UNCONSCIOUS
The Museum at FIT in New York presents Dress, Dreams and Desire: Fashion and Psychoanalysis, a groundbreaking exhibition exploring the connections between fashion, desire, and the unconscious.
Running from September 10, 2025, to January 4, 2026, it gathers nearly one hundred creations by designers such as Alexander McQueen, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Vivienne Westwood.
The exhibition invites visitors to reflect on how clothing becomes an expression of hidden emotions and desires.
Curated by Valerie Steele, director of the museum, the exhibition draws on Freudian and Lacanian theories to reveal the symbolic power of fashion.
Sculptural dresses, corsets, hats, and shoes are presented as tools of interpretation, expressing power, seduction, modesty, or vulnerability.
Each piece acts as a psychological projection of the self, suspended between fantasy and inner tension.
Through a scenography built on mirrors, light, and shifting spatial perspectives, the exhibition creates an immersive experience where fashion and the psyche intertwine.
Dress, Dreams and Desire shows that fashion is not merely about appearance but a language of intimacy, emotion, and imagination.
