On a constant quest to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future, the fashion sphere looks to minimalism, but how does the trend go hand in hand with the notion of sustainability?

Minimalism is all about living with less and sustainability pushes us to use our natural resources more wisely, so basically both equal less and both teach us to be happier this way. When one enters the minimalist lifestyle, they find themselves using what they possess in a more efficient manner therefore pushing themselves to reduce waste. Moreover, minimalism widely reduces consumption as we appreciate the things the things we have more, we take better care of them and are less likely to throw them out when they go out of style. We try to give clothes as long a life as possible.

So how does one apply the minimalist style? Easy:

- Make it your own! This means that if you are not comfortable wearing something, then don’t wear it. It doesn’t matter if someone else wears it and looks good in it. What matters is how you feel about yourself when you wear that item. This actually applies to fashion in general, but that’s a conversation for another day.

- Invest in quality! There is no point in buying a million pound piece if it will be torn up after a few washes or a pair of shoes that won’t last long enough to see you through the season. If you can afford it, buy quality items that will last longer.

- Make the most of your clothes! Learn how to use your clothes effectively and don’t just throw them on the floor when you take them off. For example, hang up or fold your shirts instead of throwing them on the floor, or fold your pants and stack them neatly in a drawer. Also, get rid of old clothes that you never wear anymore – donate them to charity or sell them to a consignment shop.

- Finally – take this as the bonus tip – keep in mind minimalism doesn’t necessarily mean neutral. While it has been a prerequisite for quite sometimes, if you look closely at recent minimal fashion, you’ll notice that designer aren’t afraid to go for bold colours, so why would you be? Just because you’re doing your part saving our planet doesn’t mean you have to look boring doing it.
