ROYAL DSM & SYMPATEX TECHNOLOGY - Arnitel (Netherlands)
The Royal DSM society, is based on active science. It collaborates with Sympatex to launch a new material: Arnitel. This bio-based thermoplastic will be used to manufacture waterproof, windproof and breathable membranes for sports applications. Indeed, Arnitel faces growing consumer demand for low-carbon products and sustainable raw materials in the sports and apparel value chain.
Arnitel is manufactured with biobased raw materials from organic waste, and using a mass balance approach. The mass balance provides a set of rules on how to attribute biosourced or recycled content and thus be able to claim one of these certifications. More than 25% of the raw materials needed for the membrane are converted from biosourced materials. Sympatex ensures that the membrane keeps all its performance values, but also that it remains entirely recyclable at the end of its life cycle.
The final product then contains more than 25% of biobased content. Sympatex thus increases the proportion of biosourced product in its membrane and responds to the growing demand of consumers and legislation for a lower carbon footprint. The integration of Sympatex membranes helps to meet a commitment in the climate charter but also to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% more quickly, compared to 2015. Sympatex then allows its customers to move to a more circular economy based on biomass.
