RISE OF THE AUSSIE : 3 AUSTRALIAN FASHION STARS IN THE MAKING
The minimalist, structured and chic DNA of Australia’s fashion DNA has been well established by the likes of Dion Lee, Christopher Esber and ELLERY but in the Tiktok Era and at the dawn creative renaissance after multiple lockdowns in their country, a younger generation of Australian designers is on a mission to shake things up ! Many show great promise each in their on way so it can be difficult to just pick three… but we did anyway.
After spending years studying land surveying, the brand’s creative director and designer Wynn Cramshaw built a strong interest in fashion by watching designer collections online before eventually starting studying fashion part-time and then fully committing to it. He describes the brand as “a continuous project & research of craft and innovation expressed through clothing”. The brand merges genders with pieces for all people and impressive styling balance going from show stoppers, to extreme casual outing, to loungwear-ish looks all in one breath !
Jordan Gogos graduated from Parsons and launched his label at the peak of the pandemic in 2020. He describes the brand as “A Trojan Horse. It’s a conduit for community-making. It’s really about ushering people and new ideas especially in Australia into this industry that is usually so gate kept.”
Everything is done in house, including the shoes and all the pieces are meant to be exclusively sold to museums to be used for installations. Seems fitting then, that the brand’s latest collection made its debut at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum.
Creative director Isabelle Hellyer already is a household name in Australia with celebrity fans such as Charli XCX or Rowan Blanchard. She describes all is gentle spring (fashioned in lower case) as “couture techniques for serene living.”. The business approach is quite independent and non traditional. The brand is mainly interested in limited one-off experiments with found fabrics & small collaborative capsules with artists and friends. They do short supply chains, historic costumes and flexible fabrics. The brand’s also non-seasonal as “they do what they can, when they can”.
