The World According to AI: When AI Takes Up the Brush

The World According to AI questions our time through works where artificial intelligence becomes a tool for creation, perception, and debate.

From April 11 to September 21, 2025, the Jeu de Paume presents The World According to AI, an exhibition that explores the growing role of artificial intelligence in artistic creation. Through a selection of works created between 2016 and today, the exhibition questions how AI perceives and transforms our world.

The exhibition is structured around two main types of artificial intelligence: analytical AIs, used in facial recognition and image analysis, and generative AIs, capable of producing text, images, or sound. Though often invisible, these technologies increasingly shape our visual culture and modes of creation.

The exhibition brings together major artists such as Hito Steyerl, Trevor Paglen, Justine Emard, and Kate Crawford. Their works—sometimes playful, sometimes unsettling—confront us with the social, political, and ethical issues raised by these technologies.

Time capsules punctuate the exhibition route. Inspired by cabinets of curiosities, they revisit the history of artificial intelligence and computational technologies. They remind us that the questions we ask today are not entirely new. The World According to AI is neither a naïve tribute nor an alarmist rejection. The exhibition invites reflection. It questions our relationship with machines, images, and creation. In a world increasingly shaped by algorithms, it offers a critical, sensitive, and necessary perspective on the technologies that surround us.
