Hermès’ Corner Store in Isetan Shinjuku, Tokyo

As one of the most luxurious brands on the planet, it is essential for Hermès to be present in Isetan Shinjuku, Tokyo. Of course, the French luxury brand Hermès, has been present in the city of Tokyo for many years, but recently it unveiled a renovated and expanded corner store in one of Tokyo's largest department store. Designed by Parisian architect firm RDAI, the space's layout was inspired by the inherent duality of Japanese culture, giving the two spaces contrasting themes. The first space, located near the open entrance, represents the urban bustle of the Shinjuku district, while the other space, located further back, captures the serenity of a park.

Although the overall design is bolder than most other Hermès stores, it is still very typical of Hermès, because of its understated chic and elegance for which it is known around the world. Before customers enter the corner store, they first pass by a facade covered with traditional Japanese tiles called Mino-yaki. The store, which is equipped with terrazzo floors and walls, as well as many curves in the design, helps to set it apart from other stores, as everything is captured in a soft pink hue. In addition, rugs were added to the decor which poetically mimic the city lights, and Takeshi Shikama's photographs that adorn the walls and dressing rooms, featuring textiles from Kyoto, infuse the design with more local touches.

In the "garden" area, the design is more linear and the intimate areas are in a slightly darker color palette. Since art and design are intertwined at Hermès, the corner store sees additional artwork interspersed throughout the spaces, with works by artists such as Gianpaolo Pagni and Jan Bajtlik. The new Hermès store features a wide range of products, including men's and women's clothing, accessories, leather goods, watches, equestrian gear, home goods and fragrances.
