CHANEL REINVENTS CULTURE IN SHANGHAI

Chanel inaugurates an unprecedented cultural space in Shanghai with the opening of the Espace Gabrielle Chanel, located inside the Power Station of Art, one of the city’s most prominent contemporary art museums.
Conceived as the first public library in mainland China entirely dedicated to contemporary art, the space brings together more than 50,000 books, audio publications and research resources spanning art, design, architecture and social sciences.
The project marks a new chapter in Chanel’s cultural commitment, anchored in Shanghai’s dynamic and evolving creative landscape.

Designed by Japanese architect Kazunari Sakamoto, the library occupies approximately 1,700 square meters on the museum’s third floor.
The architecture unfolds as a fluid and immersive journey, imagined as a valley of books where visitors are invited to move freely through the collections.
Beyond the library itself, the space also includes a contemporary Chinese art archive, a 300 seat modular theater, exhibition areas and a panoramic terrace overlooking the Huangpu River, offering a multifaceted approach to cultural experience.

The initiative is part of a long term partnership between Chanel and the Power Station of Art, supported by the Chanel Culture Fund.
More than an exhibition, the Espace Gabrielle Chanel positions itself as a new hub for reflection, research and exchange, where fashion engages in dialogue with ideas, history and the artistic practices shaping the present and the future.
