BOTTEGA VENETA & ITS ENDLESS SUPPLY OF SECOND CHANCES

Following Daniel Lee’s exit from the brand in November, Bottega Veneta was put in the hands of Lee’s former right-hand-man & behind-the-scenes talent: Matthieu Blazy. Lee’s appointment at the Creative Direction post had given an incredible and well-needed lift to the brand, so naturally everyone was eager to see how Blazy would handle this legacy. The answer: brilliantly! It was like he’d waited for this moment his entire life.

Cleverly making sure that he didn’t make the transition from Lee’s voice to him too brutal by remaining loyal to the established aesthetic, Blazy still very well managed to introduce his personal vision. In his own words:

The idea was to bring back energy, a silhouette that really expressed motion, because Bottega is a bag company, so you go somewhere, you don’t stay home. This collection basically is a journey (…) There’s many characters, they all have places to go, they feel quite free.”

The cropped flares were cut longer in front than in back, suggesting forward motion or speed, and the swooped backs of caban coats had a similar effect. With accessories, too, the emphasis was on the artisanal. The new Kalimero bag was woven in one piece with no seams, and the same goes for the thigh-high boots.

Like we said, it is pretty obvious that the house is in safe hands and we cannot wait to see Blazy’s next steps!
