WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT PETER : PIONEERING GENDERLESS TAILORING
When designer Peter Do first showed up on our fashion radars, it was pretty clear that he would be a breath of fresh air in the industry and judging by his latest show, “breath of fresh air” was an understatement !
After two seasons focused on womenswear, Do added his first male models to his collection, introducing an incredibly innovative voice not only to genderless fashion but to tailoring as well ! The silhouettes blend perfectly in terms of gender identity, so much so that one wouldn’t even be thinking about it anymore. The collection is made for her, him, them and is definitely more oriented towards the craft and one’s own perception of oneself.
Do has managed to give individuality to tailoring. Put together, the garments give very avant-garde, singular silhouettes but you could single out one piece, style it differently and get the same results ! Moreover, the attention to detail here is nothing short of impressive. It involves deconstruction in the form of suits slit open at the hem to reveal their inner workings, minimal leaning ornamentation like tone-on-tone suture stitches over seams, and the two- or three-in-one versatility that he’s built into his work from the start. Waistbands can be adjusted to accommodate different sized hips and clever pleated skirts are attached to belts so they can be open and closed, almost like curtains. Shirts can play it straight, meaning buttoned from collar to hem, or they can be worn wrapped around the waist for the undone look he favoured here.
The genderless approach has obviously been very centre to creativity in the industry but little are the designers who managed to fully introduce it not only in terms of casting but in the actual garment ! Do’s enveloping and sensual yet strong and bold pieces are a perfect start to what will absolutely be a lasting trend and – dare we say – the future of fashion.
