The clothing brand Olderbrother has designed an unusual décor for its Los Angeles store in California and has had the great idea of placing enormous containers filled with mushrooms at the centre. They more than just adding a touch of greenery to the space, above all, these mushrooms are a symbol of the brand’s unique dyeing and production techniques.

Olderbrother designs unisex clothing using natural dyes and materials. Based in Portland, Oregon, the brand recently launched a collection dyed using matcha tea, a drink made from steeped chaga mushrooms.

MUshrooms as a new decorative element

Olderbrother’s founders, Bobby Bonaparte and Max Kingery, decided to create a mushroom garden inside their first store located in Venice Beach. The store is a 1940’s bungalow with white walls and large sash windows that bring ample natural light inside. In the centre of the room, we find a large plywood planter filled with dozens of mushrooms and a variety of plants that add texture and colour to the store, which has a deliberately minimalist décor.

For, as mentioned throughout concept no. 1 “Pastoral Lifestyle” of the EARTH Theme in Promostyl’s SS20 INFLUENCES & DESIGN Trendbook, we find a pace dictated by nature, which imposes a simple, humble, modest, qualitative and frugal lifestyle. The right tools, beautiful materials and meticulous finishes permeate this direction, in which time stands still and of which the Olderbrother store is a perfect new example.

but also as a base for making clothes

In particular, we find chaga mushrooms, which resemble pieces of burnt charcoal and are a nod to the natural techniques used to dye the clothes using this same mushroom.

The brown-toned colour of certain pieces in the store comes from steeping the clothes in chaga tea. Other clothes in a variety of colours have also been dyed using natural elements, such as indigo, wood bark, hibiscus and turmeric.
