Often nicknamed the Taiwanese Chanel, Shiatzy Chen once again infuses its distinctive stylistic essence – a blend of oriental traditions and unmistakably western urban gimmicks – with a show in the style of a midsummer night’s dream.
A collection with a blend of inspirations
For its spring/summer 2019 show, Shiatzy Chen offered the invitation to go beyond the boundaries of space and time and dive into a fantasy oriental world. To present her new collection entitled Coagulation, the Taiwanese designer wanted to immerse her guests in a world in which dream and reality combine, where flowing, diaphanous pieces are crafted in a deliciously dreamlike palette. Shades of azure blue, imperial violet, crimson pink, ink black and shiny gold delicately collide on looks with a dazzling geometry.
Traditional outfits with an Asian bent are revisited in an urban style, adapting to technical materials and street sneakers, while lace and jacquard fabrics are given expression in an unmistakably modern day wardrobe.
When it comes to accessories, jade bracelets and Mahjong tiles rub shoulders with neo-futuristic sandals and avant-garde mesh ankle boots, all against a background of desirable leather goods.
Here Shiatzy Chen presents a collection in step with the modern age, blending contemporary trends and traditional heritage, at the crossroads of its stylistic approach.
A designer with an atypical success story
The Shiatzy Chen label was founded in 1978 with the idea of establishing a new Chinese elegance, a style that would mark the fusion of East and West, while beautifully showcasing the craftsmanship know-how of this ancient empire. The brand owes this sense of balance to its founder Wang Chen Tsai-Hsia, a charismatic figure with an unusual career path.
Born in 1951 in Changhua, a city with a prolific cultural history, this eldest child from a modest family of seven chose – despite her excellent level of education – to train in a practical profession: making clothes.
When she was a teenager, she left the classroom for the tight ranks of ready-to-wear, nurturing the sweet dream of one day being able to manufacture the elegant dresses that appeared in the window displays of Chinese department stores. Through tireless work and dogged persistence, this dream finally became a reality. Just like the theme of her show.
