RETURN OF THE OG SKATER BOI
Like many other counter culture movements throughout history, the Skater look has been revisited, re-imagined and re-organised many times. So much so that it’s established itself as one of the ultimate mainstream cool guy trends… going completely against what skateboarding originally stood for. Thankfully, the fashion industry and its creatives – especially in the past couple of years — are obsessed with using the past while working on their new designs and in that sense have decided to bring the OG 90’s Skater Boi, only much messier than the original.
So what is so different about this approach to the trend ? More than you’d think ! Wether it’s established brands or younger, more recent ones, the creative directors somehow all seem to have an interest or history of skateboarding themselves, therefore providing them the necessary knowledge and insight to create pieces and looks that actually reflect the original purpose and function of skateboarding. While the trend uses the basic pieces and volumes of skateboarding – meaning your oversize everything from hoodie, to baggy, to tops and jumper – the fabric manipulations and styling scream marginal individuality and creativity much like skateboarding did back in the days.
This look is dirty, DIY, messy and absolutely not meant for the shy ones.
The other great factor is that if we’re looking to the past mood-wise, the styling is very much adapted to our current social order. If you look closely at the featured pictures, this skater boi is not afraid to go for bright colours, androgynous silhouette and mix all the strong fabric he can find in effort to keep it as ethical as humanly possible ! After all, just because the trend finds its origin in counter culture doesn’t mean we’re dealing with heathens with no knowledge that the world has evolved.
The result can easily be seen on the fashion scene too ! Seriously, take a look around the next fashion event you’ll attend and you’ll quickly notice those OG Skater Boi roaming the room and while their look isn’t necessarily the traditional one for fashion executive and great figures, they are clearly here to stay !
