Self-heating underwear that could allow us to effectively combat the winter chill? This is the promise made by SKIINCore with its new-generation ready-to-wear, presented this week via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. But how is such a feat possible? Here’s a presentation.
Smart underwear
It all begins with an ultra-fine garment designed to warm up your body’s key areas (heart, hands, thighs and feet) depending on its temperature, your movements and the external temperature. These one-of-a-kind top and leggings, which can be worn just as easily under your everyday outfits as winter sports clothing, have the unique feature of being made from a conductive yarn that can hold 18 watts of power and thus diffuse heat for almost eight hours.
The icing on the cake: the product is controlled from your smartphone without even being connected to any extra cables. “We wanted to take the wires out of wearable technology and, living in Canada, we know what it’s like to deal with harsh cold weather. While developing a textile computing platform, the team discovered a way to transfer heat through the fibres of everyday fabrics,” stated Hin Fan, SKIINCore’s Product Manager.
an innovative high-technology knit
This is where the secret of SKIINCore underwear lies: a knit boasting high-performance technologies, integrating heating elements between the sweat-wicking synthetic inner layer and the heat-trapping wool outer layer. So when the temperature drops, the base layer turns on to heat things up. On the contrary, it will automatically switch off if it feels that the body is on the point of becoming too hot. Finally, this clothing is able to detect when the user increases their physical activity and adapts to their lifestyle the more they wear it.
In addition, SKIINCore products feature articulating joints: ribbed on the outside and smooth on the inside, their design guarantees unfailing comfort. There is also a charging jack, and the battery has a USB-C port so that the user can charge their phone while on the move, even when powering the base layer. Last but not least, the product is fully machine washable. What more could you ask for?
